remarkable transformations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A chair becomes a ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A feed sack becomes clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scarf becomes a hooded vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A product designed for one purpose begins participating in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These transformations can appear simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet they often reveal something interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products Leave Clues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the challenges when studying transformation is that many transformations are difficult to observe clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideas evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technologies emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pathways can become difficult to trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Products, however, often leave clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their states can be observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their forms can be examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their transformations can be compared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transformation In Plain Sight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A transformative product allows us to observe change in a tangible form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something else emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transformation may not explain every aspect of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet it provides an observable example from which patterns can be explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Products Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Products are interesting because they often make transformation visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationships between states can sometimes be seen directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bridges can be examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition states can be explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The different approaches to transformation can be compared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What may appear abstract elsewhere can become surprisingly concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Than Objects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, a product may seem like a simple object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something manufactured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet many products tell stories about adaptation, possibility and change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They reveal how an entity can move between states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How new uses emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How additional possibilities become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How transformation occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Through Observation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the goals of the Transformative Design research was not to tell products what they should become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was to observe what had already occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To study transformations that already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To look for patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And learn from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Observation Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The more transformations that were observed, the more certain questions began to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why did some transformations occur through rearrangement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why did others involve becoming something else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why did some transformations involve additional possibilities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The products themselves rarely provided complete answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet they often provided valuable clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Personal Observation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most rewarding aspects of the research was discovering that transformation could be studied through things that already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not through speculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not through prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But through observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The products were not the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were the teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each transformation offered a glimpse into a reality that had already occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And each transformation revealed something about how change itself might be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3
