we&#8217;ve explored a simple idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformation appears to have structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different paths through which transformation may occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more I studied transformation, the more a question began to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If transformation has structure, could it also be studied?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if it can be studied, could it be mapped?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Beyond The Outcome<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people notice transformation after it has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A chair becomes a ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A product becomes a platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A service becomes a subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process that produced it is often less obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet if transformation follows a process, then perhaps there is value in studying the process itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Observation To Design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the challenges when studying transformation is knowing where to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we focus only on the outcome, we miss the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we focus only on the journey, we may lose sight of the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A more useful approach may be to observe both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state that exists today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state that may exist tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the movement between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Simple Question<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine observing an object, product or system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How might it transform?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What would need to change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What would remain the same?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What possibilities already exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What possibilities are missing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What bridges would need to be crossed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions like these formed the basis of a process for studying transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Designing Transformation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the Transformative Design research, a six-step process was developed to help observe and map transformations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to predict the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to force change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to better understand how movement between states may occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process provided a way to study transformation with greater consistency and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why A Process Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a process, transformation can appear mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something becomes something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the reasons often remain hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A process does not remove complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can make complexity easier to observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Personal Observation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most surprising discoveries during the research was that transformation became easier to understand once it was broken into smaller observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not because transformation became simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But because it became easier to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step was learning how those observations could be organised into a process capable of studying transformation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
