We often talk about transformation as though it happens in a single moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A product becomes a platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A service becomes a subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A company becomes something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An idea becomes reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we look back, the transformation can appear immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost as though one state simply became another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But observation suggests something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation is rarely instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Illusion Of Sudden Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we encounter a transformed product, organisation or system, we usually see the final result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see what it became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rarely see every stage that existed before it arrived there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, transformation can appear sudden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet most transformations are not a leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are a progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A movement through intermediate conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Between One State And Another<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the previous articles, we explored the idea that transformation involves states, gaps and bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A current state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A future state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And something that enables movement between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what actually happens during the crossing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exists between State A and State B?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer may be more important than either state itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Role Of Transition States<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While studying products that appeared capable of transforming from one state into another, I became interested in the intermediate stages that existed between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation was rarely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State A \u2192 State B<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, it often appeared more like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State A \u2192 State A1 \u2192 State A2 \u2192 State B<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movement occurred through a series of transition states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temporary conditions that enabled progression from one state to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without them, the transformation could not occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Why Transition States Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We often focus on beginnings and endings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exists now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what we want to exist later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet transformation frequently depends on the stages in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those stages may appear temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even imperfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet they may perform a critical role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They allow movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They create continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They make transformation achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Looking Beyond The Final Form<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most interesting observations from the research was that transformed entities often appeared capable of becoming more than one thing while remaining connected to themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This rarely occurred through a single step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, movement often took place through a sequence of intermediate states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each state contributing something necessary to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final outcome was visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition states were often overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Different Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What does this become?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the more useful question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What does it need to become first?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What does it need to become after that?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because transformation may not occur through a single movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may occur through a sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chain of connected states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Personal Observation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Years after completing the original research, I still find myself noticing how often we celebrate the final form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformed system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the path that produced it is often where the quirks, uniqueness and mechanisms were formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation may appear sudden when viewed from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up close, it is often a series of connected steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A progression through states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A movement that becomes visible only when we slow down enough to observe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
