A gap by itself changes nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A desired future changes nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vision changes nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A possibility changes nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For transformation to occur, something must connect what exists with what could exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something must make movement possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While studying products that appeared capable of transforming from one state into another, I became interested in a simple question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What allows something to cross the gap?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Seeing The States Is Easy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most transformations are described using two states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The states are visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement between them is often less obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Missing Piece<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine two islands separated by water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing the location of both islands does not create a path between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The destination may be visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey may even be desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But neither creates movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bridge is still required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation appears to work in a similar way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future state may be clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet something still needs to connect the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Transformation Point<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In my Transformative Design research, I referred to this connective mechanism as a transformation point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A transformation point is not the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not the future state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the thing that enables movement between states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing that makes transformation possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without it, transformation remains an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With it, transformation becomes achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Looking Beyond The Outcome<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the reasons transformation can appear mysterious is that we often see only the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see what something became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rarely see what enabled it to become that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge disappears once the crossing has occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet it may be the most important part of the entire process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Different Way To Look At Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What if successful transformations are not defined by the quality of the future state?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if they are defined by the quality of the bridge between states?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if the most useful question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What do we want to become?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What enables movement from where we are to where we want to go?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer may reveal more about transformation than the destination itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Why This Idea Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many transformation efforts focus heavily on defining a future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roadmaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vision statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desired outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These can all be valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But none of them guarantee movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The existence of a destination does not create a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation still requires a mechanism that connects states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A way of crossing the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A transformation point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Personal Observation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Years after completing the original research, I still find myself noticing this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People often become fascinated by what something becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remain fascinated by what made becoming possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The destination may be impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge is often where the specific moves that create the result are found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
