transformation occurs because something known is rearranged differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes transformation occurs because something becomes something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes transformation occurs because new possibilities become attached to what already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is that one thing becomes capable of more than one life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Than One Possibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a simple scarf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine that same scarf becoming a hooded vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scarf has not disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vest has not appeared from nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, additional possibilities have been embedded within the original entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same object can now participate in more than one context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Some Things Seem More Valuable Than Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the interesting aspects of transformation is that some entities appear capable of doing more than one job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They find relevance in different situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others appear limited to a single purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference is often not the object itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference may be the possibilities attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout history, people have found ways to extend the usefulness of what already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A feed sack becomes clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Packaging becomes storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scarf becomes a vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An existing entity gains another possible existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transformation occurs not because the original state disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It occurs because additional states become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeing Beyond A Single Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We often look at things through the lens of their current purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How they are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformation invites another question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What else could this become?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What additional possibilities already exist but remain unseen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the Transformative Design research, this pattern was described as Integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformation through the attachment of additional states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An existing entity becomes capable of participating in more than one context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than one purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than one possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Different Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When observing a transformation, it may be useful to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has something been rearranged?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Has something become something else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or have additional possibilities been attached to what already exists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because some transformations do not replace the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They expand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Personal Observation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most interesting aspects of studying transformation was discovering that change does not always emerge in the same way or through the same steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes transformation occurs through rearrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes through becoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And sometimes through the addition of new possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What fascinated me most was the idea that an entity could remain fundamentally the same while becoming capable of participating in entirely different contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original entity may remain recognisable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the possibilities available to it can expand dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome may still be transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the additional states, add-ons or attachments can change its use and create a very different life for the entity itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explore the Original Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformative Design
