When we think about transformation, we often imagine something new being created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation appears to require addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet observation suggests another possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes transformation occurs without adding anything at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Parts Already Exist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine a collection of components spread across a table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing new is introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing is removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same elements remain present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet when those elements are arranged differently, something new becomes possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parts remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Looking Beyond Addition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many transformations attract attention because something appears to have been added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new invention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are easy to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is often harder to see is transformation through rearrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because nothing new appears to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ingredients were already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Different Kind Of Movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Transformative Design research, one recurring pattern involved entities that transformed without fundamentally changing what they were made from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation occurred through a shift in configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relationship between components changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrangement changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation emerged from a different orientation of existing elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Value Of Rearrangement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This raises an interesting possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if some transformation challenges are not problems of absence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if the capability already exists?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if the resources already exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if the components already exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge may not be acquiring something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge may be seeing a different arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Why Rearrangement Is Easy To Miss<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Transformation through rearrangement can be difficult to observe because the focus often falls on the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We see what emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We overlook the fact that the same elements existed before the transformation occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference was not the ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference was how the ingredients related to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Re-Orientation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Within the Transformative Design research, this pattern was described as Re-Orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transformation through rearrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entity remains fundamentally connected to what it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet through a change in orientation, configuration or structure, a new state becomes possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing essential has been added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing essential has been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation occurs through a different arrangement of what already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Different Question<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When confronted with a transformation challenge, it may be tempting to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What do we need to add?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes that is the correct question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another question may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What already exists that could be arranged differently?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because not every transformation begins with addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some begin with observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Personal Observation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most intriguing aspects of transformation through rearrangement is how easily it can be overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a transformation succeeds, attention often moves to the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the result may have emerged from elements that were present all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing extraordinary was added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extraordinary aspect was the arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
